Tech Updates - Supporting Information

Tech Corner Updates
  • Tech Camp Sessions
  • Filtering Games,
  • Restricting Chrome Web Store
  • Accessing home google account

Here is the supporting information :)
TECH CAMP
Total of four sessions for each grade level.  Check schedule for dates, content as well as who will be presenting the lessons to your class - info is also listed on the staff calendar.  We ask that ALL students attend these sessions by homeroom and invite all others to join a session with their homeroom pod buddy.

We are just trying to remove some of the distractions from the educational use of chromebooks.

FILTER - BLOCKING GAMES
Our plan is to filter and block the entire games category for students - this will not block anything that is tagged as an educational game but it should help in blocking the IO stuff and other games that students shouldn't be accessing.  Again, whatever lightspeed tags as an educational game, that will still work.

This should be put into place within the next day or two - if there are any sites that no longer works after this update that you feel should work, please send me the web address.

GOOGLE WEB STORE
We are in the process of restricting the webstore so students cannot add non-approved apps and extensions to their school google account.

ACCESSING HOME GOOGLE ACCOUNT
We put a restriction into student accounts with our management software so student can no longer log into their home google accounts while logged into their school accounts.  We hope this will minimize their switching between accounts during class.  Note: In order to access their home accounts, they would need to log out of their school account and log into their home account.

Tech Camp Sessions

Hello Everyone,
So sorry for the delay in getting you the schedule for this years Tech Camp (formally known as Digital Bootcamp) pod sessions.  We will be meeting with each pod three times this year during WIN on days 1 and 3.  We have updated the lessons for the seventh graders and have created three new lessons for the eighth graders.

Please check the attached spreadsheet for topics and for lesson schedules.  We are requesting that students attend these lessons by homeroom with their homeroom teacher.  This enables us to meet with the same group of students each time we visit.  Paraprofessionals as well as case managers are asked to join one of the pod homerooms when the lessons are being presented.  Integrated Arts and World Language teachers are also encouraged to attend.  We also welcome any and all participation from all staff members as many of you have personal stories that support the lessons we are teaching.

Please know that the lesson schedule may need to be adjusted due to possible snow days - we will inform you as soon as we are aware of any date changes.

Thank you all for your support of this important program!

Parent Teacher Conference Information

It is that time of year... time to setup Parent Teacher Conferences.  We once again will be using  signup.com (we have used this site for the past few years - it was called volunteerspot before).  If you have never used the site before, you will need to create an account.  If you are doing conferences as a group, only one person needs to create.  Please have your signup.com conferences setup and ready to go by 3:00pm on Friday, October 26 and email your parents by that time as well.

Be sure that you offer enough spaces to provide conferences for all of your students. Conference slots should be 10 minutes in length.  Utilize PowerSchool to email your parents about conferences - talk as a pod how you want to notify your parents.

8th Grade Conferences:
  • Monday, 11/5/2018 Parent Conferences 4:30-7:30PM
  • Wednesday, 11/14/2018 Parent Conferences 3:30-7:30PM
7th Grade Conferences:
  • Monday, 11/5/2018 Parent Conferences 4:30-7:30PM
  • Wednesday, 11/14/2018 Parent Conferences 3:30-7:30PM
  • another day if pods choose to do a third day

There are also a bunch of other helpful videos/support materials that they can use from the site to help them out.

If you feel they need more information, please let me know,
Donna

A Note from the Tech Corner: Printing Landscape Documents from Chromebooks

Please know, LANDSCAPE printing works inconsistently from the chromebooks.  If you have a document that is formatted in landscape mode you have the following options:
  • the assignment can be viewed/graded electronically via Google Classroom
  • the assignment's page orientation will need to be reformatted to use PORTRAIT mode
  • the assignment can be printed in landscape mode for each student from your laptop
As always, we strongly encourage you to electronically view and grade of documents when possible.
